Free Toolbox – Working with Hazardous Substances

October 13th, 2013

This information should be read by anyone dealing with hazardous substances in their business.

It is a practical guide to work safely with hazardous substances & is relevant both at a management & governance level.

The information is provided by the Environmental Protection Authority & Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment & includes information about:

  • Hazardous Substances & New Organisms (HSNO) legislation
  • Health & Safety in Employment (HSE) legislation

So does this relate to your business, what is a hazardous substance?

A hazardous substance is a substance that is:

  • Explosive
  • Flammable
  • Oxidising agent
  • Corrosive or toxic to the environment

So if you have some type of product above in the work place this information relates to you & from a risk perspective something you need to do something about.

There are 5 steps to safety

  1. Prepare an inventory
  2. Assess the risks (eliminate, isolate, minimise)
  3. Use & store your substances safely
  4. Get ready for am emergency
  5. Key HSNO controls

So take a moment, look at the information available & if you don’t have any current process in place to manage this risk then perhaps give yourself a timeframe to work with suppliers, staff, management & your HSE team & address the 5 safety steps.
