Cyclone Impact & Recovery in Hawke’s Bay

Cyclone Gabrielle, which hit Hawke’s Bay on February 14, is going to have significant impacts on local businesses and communities, and the wider economy, for a long time to come.

The cyclone brought heavy rainfall and strong winds, causing widespread damage to infrastructure including roads, bridges, and power lines. On a personal level we received flooding at home, got yellow stickered and had no power or water for two weeks (and still don’t have potable water). Damage for us was minor though compared to the losses that others have had.

As our region’s economy is heavily reliant on the horticulture and agriculture industries, the cyclone’s effects are going to have a significant impact on these sectors, as well as impacting other businesses and the community in general.

If you’re reading this outside Hawke’s Bay, please don’t for one moment think that things are anywhere near back to normal here.

In addition to the economic impact, the cyclone’s aftermath is continuing to have a significant human toll on the Bay. The widespread flooding meant many people were forced to evacuate their homes and have endured damage to their properties, and some people have lost everything. And sadly, we’ve also had a number of fatalities across our region.

So while business goes on, let’s remember all those folks that have been adversely affected and give them the support they need in the coming months.
